PROJECTS/PROGRAMS

The Foundation has participated in a number of projects including the following:

  1. Launched an in-school, volunteer program in 2003. The program involves BDPF volunteer teachers going into classrooms and helping students with their assignments, especially in reading and math.

  2. Hosted several academic tours in Clarendon County regarding the Briggs v. Elliott story; including hosting instructors and students from the University of New Orleans, New York University and The Citadel.

  3. Collected and distributed books, instructional materials and supplies that aid in the effectiveness of the educational process. This program was enacted in 2003 and is ongoing. To date, the approximate value of books, materials and supplies collected and distributed has exceeded $75,000.00

  4. Published a Social Studies Curriculum Guide and Teacher Resource booklet regarding the Briggs v. Elliott case. These published materials are consistent with the South Carolina Department of Education’s Social Studies Standards. The materials are for unlimited use in public schools throughout South Carolina.

  5. Published Quest For Equality, a brief history of the Briggs v. Elliott case.

  6. Published a pictorial book on the history of Clarendon County and donated all captured historical images to the Clarendon County Archives.

  7. Collaborated with The Museum of the New South on the development of an exhibit called COURAGE: The Struggle To End Segregation And The Guts To Fight For It, depicting the Briggs v. Elliott case. In addition to The Museum of the New South, the exhibit has been shown at The Holocaust Museum in Los Angeles, CA; The Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture in New York, NY; The Reginald F. Lewis Museum in Baltimore, MD; The Underground Railroad Museum in Flushing, OH; The State Museum in Columbia, SC, and in various museums throughout South Africa. The exhibit has a permanent home at Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, NC which is made possible through a grant from Bank of America.

The Foundation has developed, initiated and taught a number of educational programs for children and adults including the following:

  1. Tutorial enrichment program for children;

  2. Health education programs for children and adults;

  3. Parents’ leadership program;

  4. African-American history program;

  5. Cultural enrichment program for selected disadvantaged youth;

  6. Personal skills development program for disadvantaged women;

  7. Basic understanding of the justice system;

  8. Drug awareness education.
