Dawn of Desegregation: J. A. De Laine and Briggs v. Elliott
By Ophelia De Laine Gona, Ph.D.
$25.00 (includes shipping and handling)
In a move that would define him as an early, although unsung champion for civil rights justice, Rev. Joseph A. De Laine, led his neighbors to challenge South Carolina’s “separate but equal” practice of racial segregation in public schools. Their lawsuit, Briggs v. Elliott, was one of the first five school segregation lawsuits argued consecutively before the U.S. Supreme Court in 1952. The resulting collective landmark decision, known as Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, struck down legalized segregation in American public schools.
The Word Made Flesh: The Desegregation Leadership of the Rev. J. A. De Laine
By Julie Magruder Lochbaum, Ph.D.
$35.00 (includes shipping and handling)
Reverend Joseph A. De Laine was both a product of his time and culture, and a visionary beyond his time and culture. He took his place within the tradition of leadership for activism as had so many African-American ministers before him – and as more famous ones would after him. De Laine worked on the front lines of the battle for education for his people as a teacher and principal, just as many clergy before him had done. Even the subject he taught, agriculture, puts him firmly in the tradition of practically-oriented schooling considered appropriate for African-Americans of his time. And yet, De Laine led people to break with tradition in a most radical way. He led them to undermine the very foundation of racism, of social separation.

Images of America Clarendon County
Marguirite De Laine, F.S. Corbett, and Cecil J. Williams
$22.00 (includes shipping and handling)
Clarendon County’s history is as rich as its Southern flavor. During the American Revolutionary War, Francis Marion, the Swamp Fox, fought in the area now called Clarendon. Five Palmetto State governors and the first South Carolinian to be crowned Miss America all came from the county. Still, Clarendon residents have shared in America’s hardships, too; for within this rural community, they have found themselves time and again confronted with America’s battles. An important portion of the Civil Rights Movement happened in the county.
Clarendon County pays tribute to this singular history, as well as to the residents who defined and developed this agrarian community. This book combines almost 200 vintage images with an educational story that both longtime readers and newcomers, young and old, are sure to enjoy.

Cecil J. Williams

Readers will be enlightened by the indisputable photographic record of Cecil Williams as he profiles the heroic people in South Carolina who sacrificed for democratic reform and societal change.
